Children do not understand the concept of money; they think it just appears out of nowhere. If parents set the stage early for children, they learn to manage money and will be more successful at saving as an adult. Kids are slow to learn and go through stages as you teach them. Once they learn you must work for money, they start to ask “did you bring home the money” when you come home from work. An easy way to begin the learning process of money management is an allowance. They do chores and receive some money. As much as they ask for it, they do not get more until the following week when their chores are completed. This will teach them that money needs to last a certain amount of time and cannot be spent all at once. As they get older this concept resonates with them and makes the transition into an adult easier. Children that are taught at a young age have an easier time as teenagers and college students, when they have to deal with credit cards, checking accounts, and debt. This process will help your child be savvier as they become more independent.
